Cemetary Guidelines

Peninsula Township owns and maintains three cemeteries: Ogdensburg, Bohemian, and Peninsula Township Cemetery.

The cemeteries are non-denominational. Burial rights may be purchased regardless of race, color, creed, religion or country of origin.

State of Michigan rules and regulations apply to Township cemeteries.

GENERAL RULES

  1. Please avoid conduct unbecoming a sacred place.
  2. Please use the conveniently located receptacles for waste materials.
  3. The Sexton sees that others comply with the rules and regulations and maintains, protects and promotes the best interest of the cemeteries. The Sexton is authorized to make temporary rules if needed, to meet emergencies which are not covered by these rules and regulations.
  4. Special cases may arise in which the enforcement of a rule may impose unnecessary hardship. The Township therefore reserves the right to make exceptions, suspensions, or modifications to any of these rules and regulations, without notice, when in the judgement of the Sexton such action appears necessary.

LOTS AND LOT OWNERS

  1. People who want to purchase lot/plot should visit the Township Office where the Township Clerk will aid them in making a selection, and will issue a cemetery deed describing the lot/plot purchased.
  2. Complete payment for the lot/ plot must be made to the Township before any burial takes place.
  3. Lot/plot descriptions will be in accordance with the cemetery plats which are kept on file in the Township Office.
  4. It is the duty of the lot/plot owner to notify the Township of any change in his/her address.
  5. An unopened burial site may be divided into four (4) cremains sites or one full body burial and three (3) cremains. If a lot/plot is used for more than two cremains there will be an increase in the cost of the lot/plot.
  6. Grave markers are allowed as follows: one family marker per set of lots/plots, and one marker per individual grave site. Individual markers are also allowed for cremains, provided these markers are flush with the ground and no more than 12 inches x 30 inches . (see diagram)
  7. All markers must be placed on a cement foundation. The foundation must be flush with the ground and have a four-inch perimeter around the individual marker/headstone/monument. All foundations require a six-inch setback from the owned lot/plot. All markers must be approved by the Sexton regarding size, design, specifications, quality, material, lettering, finish, and workmanship. The installer will be financially responsible for any damage that may occur.
  8. If the lot/plot owner decides to sell any grave plot, he or she must sell to Peninsula Township, which will buy unused grave plots at one-half (50%) of the prevailing selling price.
  9. Lots/plots become the asset of the estate and must be resold back to the Township or deeded to another party, but in all cases the deed must be transferred through the Township Office.

CARE OF LOTS

  1. The Township, along with the Sexton, maintains the trees and shrubberies that either have been left in place or planted by the Township. Individual plantings are not allowed. The Sexton is not responsible for maintaining existing individual plantings.
  2. The general care of the cemeteries is assumed by the Township.
  3. An endowment fund has been established in which the Township holds and invests the principal sum deposited and uses the annual income to defray the costs of the general operation of the cemeteries.

INTERMENTS

  1. The cemeteries will open for interments from spring thaw to fall freeze.
  2. The Sexton must be notified of all funerals.
  3. A Funeral Director, upon arrival at a cemetery, must present the necessary burial permit from the local Health Department to the Sexton.
  4. When a family owns multiple lots/plots, the location of interments is designated by the owner. Should the owner fail or neglect to make such designations, the Township reserves the right to make the interment in a location designated by the Sexton.
  5. The Sexton requires at least 48 hours notice prior to any interment and at least one week's notice prior to any disinterment or removal.
